When Daniel O’Connell agitated for the repeal of the Act of Union of 1801, his popularity soared to new heights. This infamous legislation was described by historian W.E.H. Lecky as having been extorted by the most enormous corruption in the history of representative institutions. It may be that this fine reel was composed during the years following Catholic emancipation.
