“That fella’s an ould cabin hunter,” was how my father began explaining this to me. He was referring to a troublesome visitor who would sit and talk too much on a busy day when some farm work was in need of attention. When the visitor finally went out the door of our home, my father noted that he would visit a neighbor’s house for another call and then to another house after that. At every house he was given tea and sandwiches. My father claimed that this particular “magpie” didn’t need to eat at his own home because of all his daily visits. Such a person in our locality was known as a ‘cabin hunter’. I got this tune from concertina and fiddle player John Kelly.
