This two-part setting is from piper Seamus Ennis, who sometimes referred to it as ‘The Thirsty Leprechaun’. Seamus talked of how a hard drinking leprechaun ran out of poteen and was humbled into drinking small spoonfuls of turnip juice. During one of his tantrums, he met a wandering minstrel sleeping under an oak tree for the night. The little elf awoke the minstrel with a prod of his buckled shoe. The minstrel almost fainted at the sight of the little man, who kept asking where the minstrel had hidden his punch. When the leprechaun realized no drink was available, he promised the minstrel much woe with an ancient spell. The frightened traveler quickly produced some fresh snuff from his pouch, as a means of appeasing the leprechaun. The little man was charmed by the smell of the snuff, and in return gave the minstrel a two-part reel with a promise of twelve more parts each time he was given a pinch of the same snuff. The minstrel said goodnight to the leprechaun and disappeared into the night. He never returned to that area of Ireland ever again, but was heard fiddling the reel and always told the story of how it got its name.
