This very fine reel was named after the father of the late Tipperary accordionist Paddy O’Brien. The tune was introduced to Irish radio during the late 1950s by Ciarán Mac Mathúna. It was aired on ‘A Job of Journeywork’ and was played by the Bridge Céilí Band from north Tipperary. Paddy O’Brien and his father (who played the fiddle) were prominent members of the band, which also included flute player Paddy Joe Maloney, and a second button accordionist whom we knew affectionately as “‘Francie’ Brereton. Like many of our tunes, this one is too old for any describable source.
