The Irish Traditional Music Archive (ITMA) is committed to providing free, universal access to the rich cultural tradition of Irish music, song and dance. If you’re able, we’d love for you to consider a donation. Any level of support will help us preserve and grow this tradition for future generations.
In cultural terms, it’s easy to figure how this one got its title. In Ireland of long ago, it was customary to have a harvest celebration when the wheat, oats, or rye was threshed and sold. In some parts of the nation, this custom is remembered when furniture was removed from kitchens to make room for the house dance. The tune is very well known by most musicians, and perhaps also by some who know it as ‘The Cork Hornpipe’.
