James was a well-known whistle player from Co. Monaghan, who composed many new tunes that were taken into the Irish tradition. He was a fervent follower of and player at music sessions at the Fleadh Cheoi Is of the 1960s and 70s, and traveled long journeys to be part of where the music was played. The last time I saw him was in the square of Listowel at the All-Ireland Fleadh of 1982.
