Harper David Murphy composed this march for his Lordship. After he played for King Louis XIV of France, Murphy became pompous and conceited, and started criticizing O’Carolan’s music when he was at a function at an inn in Ballyfarnan. Murphy explained that O’Carolan’s tunes were “like bones without beef”. Among the crowd of people was O’Carolan, who heard every word of what Murphy had said. When the appropriate moment came, O’Carolan grabbed Murphy by the hair of the head, and dragged and kicked him through the room unmercifully. Murphy’s screeches could be heard at a great distance, with O’Carolan roaring, “Put beef to that air, you puppy!”
