The Irish Traditional Music Archive (ITMA) is committed to providing free, universal access to the rich cultural tradition of Irish music, song and dance. If you’re able, we’d love for you to consider a donation. Any level of support will help us preserve and grow this tradition for future generations.
This is another nice piece of music that nowadays could be played as a set dance. I hadn’t heard it played by anyone in Ireland or the U.S. until I settled in Minnesota in 1982, and then I heard it played on Garrison Keillor’s radio show ‘A Prairie Home Companion’ by Minnesota’s own Northern Star Céilí Band. Later I was playing some gigs with fiddler Jamie Gans, who also played with the Northern Star, and with a bit of coaxing, he gave me the tune. It is a typical O’Carolan composition.
