Many tunes and songs are written in memory of the Co. Kerry barrister Daniel O’Connell (1775-1847). He was elected to the British Parliament in 1823 where he represented his constituency of Co. Clare. He agitated for Catholic Emancipation for Ireland, and after speaking in the House of Commons for three days in 1829, Emancipation was granted to Irish Catholics, who labelled him ‘The Liberator, and he became one of Ireland’s greatest heroes. This walking march in his honor came to light from the Clare fiddle player Patrick Kelly, during the early 1960s, when he gave the tune to fiddler Seán Keane of the Chieftains.
