As a song, it has received widespread attention for decades, not only by Irish nationals, but by people nearly everywhere in the U.S. and elsewhere. It was popular as a march among céilíbands of the 1950s and 60s, and often played at céilí dances when ushering people onto the floor for a Siege of Ennis.
