The best setting I’ve ever heard of this came from fiddler John Kelly, who was always an admirer of the musical qualities of this tune. I first heard Séamus Ennis play it with great grandeur and delivery. Its title suggests that pipers in the old days who played fairs or other open-air events were often motivated or inspired by the value of coinage given to them. Their prestige and livelihood was often boosted by lovers of their craft with sixpenny money as a valued reward.
