This title may have come from what farmers in Ireland did in early spring, which was the spreading or scattering, or ‘top-dressing’ on small pastures. Top-dress was usually farmyard manure or clay mixed with peat and shoveled lightly throughout a field to stimulate the growth of grass which would later become a meadow. I got this tune from several sources.
