The ‘little people,’ leprechauns, or ‘na sheoga [na síoga]’ are remembered by the title of this. It was customary for musicians to honor the wee folk at the end of a night’s playing. This was usually done by placing a small taste of whiskey in a mug outside the open door of a house where a session ended in the late hours. A piper would play a tune facing the doorway and the tune was intended towards the darkness outside. This was a long-honored practice of thanking the ‘little people’ after a good night’s music. The practice of doing this began to fade away during the 1920s.
