This hornpipe seems to have a history of its own, or perhaps it was a huge favorite when first introduced. It’s remarkable in the sense that musicians with a small repertoire could easily be relied on to play it, while others with huge repertoires tended to ignore it. Seamus Ennis turned my head on one occasion in Dublin when he played this on the pipes and afterwards told his listeners that the setting he played was directly from his father. He stopped short of using the word ‘God’ when finishing his comments. James Hill of Newcastle-on-Tyne is remembered for composing this very well-known hornpipe.
