    This is an old Donegal fiddle hornpipe from the repertoire of Frank Cassidy of Teel in, Co. Donegal. Fiddler James Kelly of Dublin / Miami Springs gave it to me many years ago. It has a few variants depending on who plays it. I’ve heard other Donegal fiddlers like Danny Meehan and John Doherty play excellent settings and both of them had stories to accompany this tune, which they usually played without a companion hornpipe. Some of these players tend to have their own slant on its title, i.e., ‘The Atlantic Wave,’ or ‘The Atlantic Sound.’ Stories attached to it tell of a fiddler on his way home from a wedding who sits down to rest from long-distance walking. His resting place is beside a rock on top of a cliff overlooking the sea. The fellow falls asleep with the help of earlier amounts of whiskey supplied at the wedding. He recalls later that the sound of the wind, combined with the sound of heavy waves dashing against the rocky shore and its repetition gave him inspiration for this tune. He said he woke up with the new ‘hornpipe’ already in his head!
