The Irish Traditional Music Archive (ITMA) is committed to providing free, universal access to the rich cultural tradition of Irish music, song and dance. If you’re able, we’d love for you to consider a donation. Any level of support will help us preserve and grow this tradition for future generations.
I heard a home recording of this from the accordion playing of Charlie Mulvihill, who lived in the Bronx. Charlie was fond of recording his selections at home, and many of his old tunes were saved to be later played by other generations of musicians in the U.S. and Ireland. He was known for mailing some of his reel-to-reel recordings to friends in Ireland. It’s generally accepted nowadays that he composed this hornpipe. The title suggested the usual response by people with poor memory to the question about a tune, “Where did you get it?” Answer: “Oh, a local lad from around here”.
