There’s a story that O’Carolan abstained from drinking alcohol and after a duration of six weeks he realized he hadn’t composed anything and could find no inspiration. Then one day, while strolling around on the streets of Boyle in Roscommon, he and his aide wandered into a grocery shop. Inside the man behind the counter boasted of a new imported brandy and requested that O’Carolan taste it. The man removed the cork from the bottle and O’Carolan sniffed. It was enough. He drank to his heart’s content, and later when he went home and composed ‘Bumper Squire Jones’.
