As I wrote in Bumber Squire Jones O’Carolan’s inspiration returned when he began drinking after being on the dry for six weeks. A short time after, he found himself at the home of a Mr. Stafford in Elphin, Co. Roscommon. While in Mr. Stafford’s parlor, it is said that he composed ‘O’Carolan’s Receipt for Drinking’, also giving it the title ‘Planxty Stafford’.
