The Irish Traditional Music Archive (ITMA) is committed to providing free, universal access to the rich cultural tradition of Irish music, song and dance. If you’re able, we’d love for you to consider a donation. Any level of support will help us preserve and grow this tradition for future generations.
I spent my first month in the United States in March 1968 at Bill MacEvoy’s home on Long Island. On the evening of arrival I was upstairs catching some sleep when Bill mercilessly woke me. “Get up,” he says, “There’s someone downstairs I want you to meet.” In a few moments I was introduced to Catherine Brennan Grant, who played with and knew Michael Coleman for years before he died in 1945. She had her fiddle with her and the first tune she played for us was ‘The Widow’s Daughter’. She remarked that Coleman loved this reel and gave it to her when she was a young girl.
