Ballymahon is an old market town in Co. Longford. The tune itself came from fiddler James Hanley, who lived not far from the town. James’ nephew Sean Keane, who is fiddler with The Chieftains, named this reel after his uncle’s local refreshment center. Mrs. Crehan of Co. Clare, who played the concertina, is also recognized as a source for this reel.
