The Irish insurrection of 1798 was organized by people like the Sears brothers and Wolfe Tone. One of its leaders was Lord Edward Fitzgerald, who was later betrayed and murdered. Lord Edward himself played the uilleann pipes. Not much is known about his father, the Duke of Leinster, who is remembered by the title of this lovely reel.
