One spring evening during the 1960s, I was harrowing with my horse, Black Bob, in a field at the back of our house in Castlebarnagh. My mother suddenly came running with shouts of “Paddy, Ciarán Mac Mathúna’s on the wireless”. I tied the horse to the gate and ran inside to listen. Just then Paddy O’Brien the Tipperary accordion player came on playing ‘The King of the Clans’ and ‘Trim the Velvet’. I was about twelve at the time and was astounded by the beauty of the tunes and the freshness of them. When the program was finished, I went outside again and unyoked the horse. I didn’t do as much as an ounce of work for the rest of that evening because of the way this reel was beating in my brain.
