The Irish Traditional Music Archive (ITMA) is committed to providing free, universal access to the rich cultural tradition of Irish music, song and dance. If you’re able, we’d love for you to consider a donation. Any level of support will help us preserve and grow this tradition for future generations.
Mick was a local musician from my neck of the woods near Daingean, Co. Offaly. He visited our old thatched house very often during the 1950s. He showed me some rudiments of the accordion and was a great storyteller. I learned afterwards that his many visits for music and yarns were a pretense. In reality, he was a slave to the taste of my mother’s fresh bread. He was an old man when I knew him. My last memory is of him tugging at the lobe of his right ear, uttering, “Isn’t it great to be a musician, with all the adorable treatment we get!” This jig was one of his. I never heard anyone else play it.
