I’ve always been deeply touched by this reel and privately wept when I first heard it played by fiddler Hughie Gillespie. It seems to have a beseeching wail as it moves through all its four parts. It may well reflect the silent scream of generations of Irish dispossessed who were forced into exile by oppression and transportation laws.
