James Connolly (1868-1916) was a trades union organizer and leader and founder of the Irish Citizens Army. He also founded the Irish Labour Party. He took part in the Easter Rising of 1916 in Dublin and was badly wounded in the G.P.O. where he and his comrades held out against British Crown forces for a week before an unconditional surrender. He was executed by a British Army firing squad on May 12, 1916, while strapped to a chair in the yard of Kilmainham Gaol.
