Owen Rua, or Owen Roe O’Neill (1590-1649} was one of Ireland’s greatest military generals. He took part in the Flight of the Earls at age seventeen in 1607 when the Irish aristocracy left Ireland for Europe. He returned to Ireland in 1641 to lead an Irish rebellion against the English occupiers. He led the Irish army that routed Scottish Major General Monro’s army at the Battle of Benburb in 1646.
