H.J. Wehman was a song publisher throughout the latter half of the 19th century on 130 Park Row in lower Manhattan. Some songs printed by H.J. Wehman, such as ‘Bridget Donahue’, conceptualise the United States as loving, pastoral, and protective of its citizenry. Although initially noted as a song publisher, H.J. Wehman published a number of instructive guides and manuals in the 1880s and 1890s pertaining mainly to the arts and English language. For example, Wehman’s Complete Dancing Master and Call Book, published c.1889, is a compilation of previously published materials, providing technical guides to round dancing and quadrilles. Located just minutes from Printing House Square, a hub of newspaper printing in the 19th century, H.J. Wehman was active during the industrial boom in American printing culture and information access.
