T.M. Scroggy, or Thomas M. Scroggy, was founded and based in Philadelphia, during the 1850s. Songs printed by T.M. Scroggy reflect a time of great social transition in the United States. Alongside the influx of Irish immigration to the United States, the publisher was further flanked by two major wars, The Mexican-American War from 1846-1848 as well as the Civil War from 1861-1865. Particular songs such as ‘Indian Maid of the Chapparal’, published in 1852, likley relay experiences of conscripted soldiers, displaying the moral quandries that come from times of war. In fact, military records beteween 1846 and 1848 reveal a Thomas Scroggy stationed in Lousiana during the Mexican-American War who was likely the publisher himself.
